December 2013 update!
Big thank-you to everyone who donated their time and money to help support Cam Cihuatlan School in Barra, Mexico. In December of 2013, donors and organizers went to Barra to see all the renovations at CAM school and honor Ron Curle and everyone who has contributed to this project. A commemorative plaque is now placed in the CAM office.
We are now in the process of raising $17,000 to support another Barra school project at Jaluco Elementary School. We plan to renovate their bathrooms, hook their water and septic services to the city's, and restore their outside electrical box and sink. Any monies left over will go towards renovating their shade structure that at present is falling apart due to termite damage.
To donate to (new name!) "Peso for Shade" send donation to Crystal Zaseybida, Kelowna Secondary School, 1079 Raymer Ave., Kelowna, BC. V1Y 4Z7. Please address cheque to Rotary of Summerland. THANK-YOU! Every peso counts!

"A worthy life is actually a life that leaves a legacy of compassion, care, sensitivity, and peace. A creative life cannot be measured by the trophies we've gathered or the goals we've achieved but by the way in which we treasure every gesture, every step, and every choice."

Why We Are Fundraising For Pennies For Shade - How it all came to be!
Mexico has a higher than average number of children with special needs. In fact, there is a very high prevalence of children with Down’s syndrome. When I was in Mexico (2010) doing some humanitarian work with the DIVA retreat, I meet a surf instructor who had two beautiful children with Down’s syndrome. This is almost a genetic impossibility to have more than one “Down’s” child in a family, especially since the parents were in their twenties when they conceived their children. Children with special needs need more equipment, education, strategies, care givers and educators, and overall help. Specialized facilities/equipment/trained professionals are required to teach these children These Mexican children need our help!
Pennies for Shade is a fundraiser for a Special Needs School, Centro de Atencion Multiple Cihuatlan (Cam Cihuatlan) in Barra de Navidad, Mexico. When I was there, I met inspiring students who had overcome poverty and their disability. In particular, I met a wheel chair bound teenaged girl who had Cerebral Palsy. She painted the most beautiful, heartfelt art work with her mouth. Her smile could light up a gymnasium. Because of her and her other friends/students at the school, we are launching a “Pennies for Shade” project. We would love your help with this. I know that when KSS and Casorso get going on a fundraiser especially when it involves children and special needs, miracles happen. Here is a little background about this project and a cost list from the school. There is also a “tear provoking” video to launch the project. Here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llDYPObODN0. Our Website is: pennies-for-shade.weebly.com.
In the spring of 2010 in Barra Mexico, it was around 40 degrees Celsius during the daytime. The children go to school from 2:00 pm – 6:30 pm. It was so hot during recess time the children typically stand around the outside of the building or go near trees to get shade. We have now built the shade structure. In our third year of fundraising, we would like to keep providing for Cam Cihuatlan , other Elementary schools in the area, and a doctor office/housing facility/day care and school facility for migrant workers. These offices and schools have many other educational and building/renovation needs.
Ron Curle, one of our main donors, has inspired us to make this project be his legacy. Thus, we decided to make this project part of our class curriculum to further help schools in Barra Mexico. At present the KSS Dance Fitness program, KSS resource room students and staff, KSS "Pennies for Shade" club, the Summerland Rotary, Rotary International, and the grade six classes at Casorso are involved in the fundraiser. We would love for any other program, class or organization to get involved and help out with the fundraising. Together we can help amazing children in Mexico.
